This is how you reach your New Year's resolutions
Having New Year's resolutions is something that belongs to every new year, and most people know the saying "new year, new opportunities." The new year can absolutely offer new possibilities to create new habits, stop an unwanted behavior, or learn something new. At the same time, almost everyone feels the frustration of setting a number of goals for the new year without being able to follow through. New Year's resolutions can be both motivating and effective for forming new habits, but this assumes they are followed. Therecan be several reasons why one does not achieve their goals, and here you can read about different pitfalls to avoid and tips on how to reach your New Year's resolutions!

Three things to avoid when making New Year's resolutions
1. Setting too many goals
This is a classic pitfall, as people view the new year as an opportunity to accomplish everything they did not manage to do in the past year. However, when you have too many goals, they often become unclear and difficult to implement in practice. Therefore, you should select one to two goals to focus on.
2. Setting goals based on things you don’t actually want
Another common pitfall is setting goals that do not align with what you like, who you are, and what you enjoy doing. Even though the new year brings opportunities, you won’t wake up as a new person the moment the year changes. Therefore, it is very important to create goals based on what you truly believe in and want to achieve. An example is if you want to eat less meat but actually really enjoy eating meat – it will be hard to follow through if your New Year's resolution is to become a vegetarian. A simpler and clearer goal could be to eat meat-free meals one to two days a week instead.
3. Not implementing the goals into your daily life
This is perhaps the most important pitfall to avoid. It is incredibly important to break down your New Year's resolutions into small goals that you can achieve in your daily life. This way, you can monitor your progress and adjust your goals if you have set them too large or difficult.
Tips for reaching your New Year's resolutions
- Make a plan
- Break down your resolutions into smaller sub-goals so that it can become part of your daily routine and a new habit.
- Involve a friend or partner so that you can motivate each other!
- Don’t let a setback completely derail you. Learn from your mistakes and move on.
When making a plan, it can be wise to have some guides to refer to, especially regarding training. It might be a good idea to check out a beginner guide to yoga, or a general guide to training programs for beginners. If you have something to refer to that has been pre-made, it can be easier to set up your training plan.

The most important thing to remember is that it takes time to change or develop a new habit. How long it takes, however, is a much-debated topic. But it can take anywhere from one to three months. Therefore, the most important tip is to keep going if your motivation wanes, while working on the sub-goals as you maintain the larger goal or New Year's resolution as a motivating factor.
